Chateau Magdelaine is a small estate whose vineyards extend on to the famous St Emilion limestone ridge (Ch. Ausone). The wines on this Chateau were Merlot dominated as the Merlot grape performs particularly well on these limestone-rich soils. In most years Merlo is 90% of the component of Chateau Magdelaine more than any other Premier Grand Cru Classé from St Emilion. The final vintage of Magdelaine was 2011, before it was swallowed up by Ch. Bélair-Monange.
A Bordeaux lover’s wine, all finesse. Fabulous aromas of violets, cherry, and rasberry, with a hint of oak. Medium-to full-bodied, with supersilky tannins and a long, ripe fruit finish. Wonderful now, better in 1999. James Suckling,Wine Spectator1997
