The 1996 D’Armailhac is still one of the most sensual and exquisite d’Armailhas I’ve ever had. It’s possible that this is my favorite d’Armailhac vintage. With a high Merlot content and high tannin, this opaque purple-colored blend of 58 percent Cabernet Sauvignon and 42 percent Merlot has surprisingly good acidity, but an expressive, opulent mid-texture and loads of charcoal-infused, cedary, black currant fruit intermixed with spice box, dried herbs, and espresso notes. It’s a full-bodied, sweet, and spacious wine.
